The Narrative of Sojourner Truth is a poignant biography as told to Olive Gilbert by Isabella Bomefree—a slave born at the end of the eighteenth century who later took the name of Sojourner Truth. She recounts the harshness of life under slavery, as well as what transpired after she won her freedom, when she became a vociferous abolitionist, a role for which she has been long remembered and revered.

Sojourner Truth's story cannot be visited too often in a modern world in which human bondage continues. Bobbie Frohman's reading, however, is far less inspiring than the narrative itself. Truth's recollection of life as a nineteenth-century slave, wife, mother, and, ultimately, abolitionist begs for a vocal depiction of her suffering and conviction. Regrettably, Frohman offers no emotion or vocal characterizations. As Truth preaches and sings, the narrator merely recites her words. Although the production is disappointing, listeners will appreciate the insight into Truth's courageous journey and marvel at her transformation. Despite foul treatment while enslaved in New York, she summoned the strength to lead a spiritual and moral life, while encouraging others to join her freethinking philosophy. J.J.B.
