      When Ella Harrison learns that her mother, Sally, has suffered a fall, she doesn't know what to do. She and Sally have been estranged for many years, only texting and occasionally talking briefly. Plus, Ella lives in Australia, and Sally is in England. Ella's husband urges her to go, and so she flies across the world. Sally had left the bathtub running, and water damage spread through the ceiling and into the first floor. Ella realizes that her mother's favorite room has been destroyed, and she vows to rebuild it. She has much to repair, both in the house and with their relationship. She gradually becomes involved in Sally's life, meeting her mother's friends and discovering how special they all are. At the same time, Ella rediscovers her love of reading and learns to detach herself from her stressful job. As the reasons for the estrangement are revealed, Ella also expands her capacity for love and forgiveness.
