They call her Lady Unlucky... With three dead fiances, Lady Eva Hyde has positively no luck when it comes to love. She sets sail for New York City, determined that nothing will deter her dream of becoming an architect, certainly not an unexpected passionate shipboard encounter with a mysterious stranger. But Eva's misfortune strikes once more when she discovers that the stranger who swept her off her feet is none other than her new employer. Or is it Lady Irresistible? Phillip Mansfield reluctantly agrees to let the fiery Lady Eva oversee his luxury hotel project while vowing to keep their relationship strictly professional. Yet Eva is more capable-and more alluring-than Phillip first thought, and he cannot keep from drawing up a plan of his own to seduce her. When a series of onsite accidents makes it clear someone wants Lady Unlucky to earn her nickname, Phillip discovers he's willing to do anything to protect her-even if it requires a scandalous deal...

Roxy Isles somewhat unevenly narrates a romance set in Gilded Age New York City. A rich American businessman works with a beautiful English aristocrat to build a hotel, but they are thwarted by both Tammany Hall and their own insecurities. While Isles's English accents are crisp and clear, perfectly establishing the level of society each British character belongs to, she truly struggles with the American accents. As a result, male characters have a tendency to sound like cartoonish thugs regardless of their social standing, while the women all have flat Midwestern accents. Given Isles's obvious skill with other aspects of narrating, not to mention the refreshing setting and plot of the audiobook itself, her delivery of dialogue is disappointing. In Shupe’s shimmering second Four Hundred historical romance (after A Daring Arrangement), set in the late 19th century, a daring architect falls for her employer. Lady Eva Hyde travels from London to New York to start working on the Mansfield hotel project in lieu of her father, famed architect E.M. Hyde, who was commissioned for the project but is too ill to complete it. While aboard ship, Eva shares a memorable champagne-infused evening with Phillip, a handsome fellow passenger. Both are shocked when they meet again in New York: Phillip is Phillip Mansfield, the hotel’s owner. He reluctantly agrees to allow Eva at the construction site if she purports to be Hyde’s secretary and only stays until Hyde can join them. He is unaware that the designs are Eva’s own and that her father will never be well enough to come to New York to work. As Phillip starts to thaw towards her professionally and becomes increasingly enamored of her personally, sexual tension leads to romantic interludes. Readers will adore Eva’s determination to succeed professionally and insistence that Phillip must respect her career goals if they are to have any chance at love.
