Originally compiled by four hobbit experts (Bador, Vivien Stocker, Coralie Potot, and Dominique Vigot) and published in French, this translation allows English-speaking Tolkien fans to delve into the lore of The Hobbit. A Tolkien biography and timeline precede approximately 100 entries, divided by category (characters; events; places). Entries often recount and condense facts or plot points from the novel, providing an at-a-glance view of a character, a language, or a group (e.g., dragons; elves). The encyclopedia intends to be a definitive source on characters and locations that may have been altered in movies and other retellings. Original illustrations from Gestin and Sanches and artwork from Leslie Boulay add to the enjoyment. A selective bibliography and source notes will aid deeper exploration. VERDICT For The Hobbit and Tolkien fans from middle grades through adult.
