AudioFile Magazine
The focus of this slow-burn audio suspense is an insane asylum that existed at a time when women were sometimes unfairly committed--often by their husbands. Narrators Fenella Fudge and Jane McDowell effectively portray two women whose buried secrets, tied to the institution, may be revealed--with potentially life-threatening results. Polly Edsell narrates the novel's conclusion, portraying the daughter of one of the women. Even though all three narrators successfully convey the male and female characters, casual listeners may find the changes in time periods and points of view challenging. Patient, attentive listeners will appreciate the author's detailed and slow-paced story filled with beautifully phrased descriptions that make one want to consider and savor.
