Chief Inspector Reg Wexford is probably Ruth Rendell's greatest creation. In this Wexford mystery we have the typical wealthy family which lives in a mansion with the requisite servants. But things are never what they seem in any Rendell story and, thanks to the sublime presentation by actor Robin Bailey, each member of the cast is portrayed appropriately. Particularly effective is how the irritations, grudges and animosities among characters are immediately discernible to the listener. Additionally, the many subplots and minor characters are well-presented by both author and narrator. This is a wise purchase. S.G.B. Four years after The Veiled One , Rendell's Chief Inspector Reginald Wexford returns in a superbly characterized, deftly plotted puzzler that explores the dark side of family life. A dinner-hour call for help brings Wexford and his assistants to Tancred House, where, in a chilling scene of carnage, he finds popular anthropologist and novelist Davina Flory, her husband, daughter and teenage granddaughter bleeding profusely from bullet wounds. Only young Daisy, who made the call, is alive. As she recovers, celebrates her 18th birthday and, in a willful, winning way, resumes living at Tancred House, Wexford tries to trace the two killers, who stole Davina's jewels as well. His investigation focuses first on the servants--a bitter couple whom Daisy soon dismisses, a handsome caretaker and a slow-witted neighborhood woman who later discovers the body of a local man, a petty blackmailer, hanging from a tree. While methodically seeking clues on the vast grounds of Tancred House and in nearby Kingsmarkham, Wexford is drawn to the plucky survivor, even as he grieves over his estrangement from his daughter Sheila, who is in love with an insufferable young novelist. For all the suspenseful pleasures of the plot, which includes arson and another murder, it's Rendell's characters, major and minor, who are standouts. This is among the very best from the accomplished, prolific author of The Veiled One and The Bridesmaid. 35,000 first printing; author tour. -

Peters's reading of this Inspector Wexford mystery adds to its suspense and atmosphere. Wexford learns of a missing woman, the secrets of a mysterious country house, and the lethal consequences of "kissing the gunner's daughter." The accents and cross-gender depictions are all successful, especially considering the number of characters. The reading is consistent with the action and the emotions involved. Peters enhances Rendell's reputation as the most chilling writer in the English-speaking world with this excellent presentation. S.C.A. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine -

A bank robbery results in murder, a triple killing in a stately manor, and Detective Chief Inspector Wexford believes these crimes are related. This is a satisfying presentation for Ruth Rendell fans. Narrator Ravenscroft separates dialogue from descriptive passages with different pacing. The interplay between characters is conversational, timed to allow the listener to imagine the situation and to recognize each speaker easily. His dialects are authentic, and his voices distinctive. The narration rolls along smoothly without histrionics, allowing the listener to follow the plot to its climax without feeling rushed. J.P. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
