Killing Eva

At the start of Blackmore’s gripping second thriller featuring Eva Scott (after 2014’s Lethal Profit), Eva, who works for an environmental NGO, is on her way to a pub during the evening rush hour when she stops to assist a shabbily dressed man who has just collapsed in London’s Waterloo Station. The man says “Kolychak” four times before dying. For some reason, the word resonates with Eva. As she tries to figure out why, she gets another jolt when her phone’s caller ID states that she’s missed a call from her brother, Jackson. But Jackson, who had been working in a mysterious capacity for the British government, supposedly killed himself more than a year earlier. The ensuing intrigue centers on two scientific breakthroughs, one of which involves using a person’s blood as a key that will only work if that person is not producing stress-related hormones. Eva faces life-threatening jeopardy an implausible number of times, but Robert Ludlum fans should enjoy the combination of suspense and action.
